Columbus provides an educational setting over two sites for children with Severe Learning Difficulties and Profound & Multiple Learning Difficulties aged 3-19 years. We are located in Chelmsford, Essex.

Our staff work as part of a multi-agency team to ensure that each individual pupil is given every opportunity to flourish, make meaningful progress and engage with the highest quality of education possible in a safe, supportive and caring learning environment. Working together with parents and local partners, we are dedicated to providing opportunities and experiences which equip all pupils with the skills, character strengths and knowledge to actively participate and thrive in the wider community, and to enable them to better their life chances.

Our pupils are happy, positive and engaged young people who are supported to explore the world around them and pursue their interests, dreams and ambitions. Welcome to our website!

Curriculum delivery

Our curriculum is broad, balanced and designed to provide all students with a strong foundation of knowledge and skills. Lessons are carefully structured to build on prior learning, ensuring students know more and remember more over time. A range of teaching methods, including practical activities, group work and independent study, are used to engage students and meet different learning styles.

Supporting progress and achievement

We monitor student progress closely to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Through regular assessments, targeted support and constructive feedback, we ensure that every student receives the guidance they need to succeed. Our teaching staff work collaboratively to share good practices and continuously refine their approach to delivering high-quality lessons.

Developing a love of learning

We aim to create a culture where learning is valued and celebrated. Our students are encouraged to explore subjects beyond the classroom through enrichment activities, extracurricular clubs and leadership opportunities. By encouraging curiosity and a growth mindset, we help students develop a lifelong passion for learning.

Our Curriculum

We are committed to consistently deliver excellence, in every lesson, every day by creating a calm, purposeful learning environment where students study a relevant curriculum that enables all students to succeed, building skills and knowledge for future life. Our aim is to provide all students with a demanding and equitable curriculum, which is both academic and creative that not only enables them to achieve first rate qualifications but also develops in each young person the characteristics to succeed in all aspects of life, by building ambition, pride, resilience, and respect in all learning, experiences, and opportunities provided by the school. This is secured through high quality teaching and learning.

We are committed to consistently deliver excellence that enables all our students to succeed in every aspect of life through:
  • Creating a stimulating learning environment through a well-planned curriculum. Developing knowledge led schemes of learning that are challenging and coherent, designed to ensure that all students achieve broad, deep, subject expertise
  • Ensuring students acquire substantive, disciplinary and hinterland knowledge and remember more with extended deliberate practice that is well planned, so that they can learn more complex content and apply the skills and understanding they have gained
  • Enabling all students to become confident and resilient while also developing their creativity and talents to the full
  • A rich learning experience is enhanced through the creative delivery of literacy, oracy, numeracy, and cultural enrichment. All students develop a rich cultural capital in all areas of the curriculum, and are strengthened by exposure to wide reading opportunities which are embedded in the curriculum
  • Respect is one of the core values of our school. Students are helped to know and understand that it is expected that a culture where mutual respect, courtesy, tolerance and diversity are without question embraced in all aspects of the curriculum.
